Maple
Emperor I
Acer palmatum
Arguably the finest large upright red Japanese Maple for demanding climates. Codenamed 'Wolff', 'Emperor I' features deeply divided, elegant palmate leaves that emerge a striking, high-gloss translucent crimson in spring, maturing to a rich, velvety dark plum-purple that holds up fiercely against summer fade. In autumn, the canopy transforms into a clean, uniform, glowing scarlet. Its dark black-red bark adds immense architectural and graphic contrast to the landscape during winter dormancy.

North Texas Micro-climate Notes
Expert Curated Selection. This is one of the very few large-leaved red cultivars that can handle extensive sun exposure in North Texas once its root framework is fully established. While it can tolerate near full-sun conditions, providing filtered relief from the blistering 3 PM southwest heat ensures the leaves lock in their pristine dark plum saturation without a hint of tip-scorch. Maintain a deep, 3-inch organic mulch blanket to stabilize soil moisture.
History & Lineage
- INTRODUCED BY
- Dick Wolff (Red Maple Nursery)
- HISTORY
- Discovered, meticulously studied for over 17 years, and introduced in 1976 by the renowned maple hybridizer Dick Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Media, Pennsylvania. Selected for its superior cellular structure, late bud-break, and phenomenal color retention, it was later patented and introduced to the broader international marketplace, quickly earning its place as an elite industry standard.
Care Instructions
Requires flawless drainage; perform a perk-test before planting and construct raised beds or berms if dealing with tight, unamended clay. Provide uniform deep-soaking cycles throughout the summer months. Do not allow the root zone to desiccate during extended heatwaves.
Landscape Usage
An exceptional anchor tree for front yards, a spectacular privacy screen or multi-stemmed focal point near modern pathways, or curated beautifully as a signature specimen in a high-end modern Japandi landscape plan.
Fun Fact
What makes 'Emperor I' a true marvel is its timing. It wakes up and buds out nearly two weeks later in the spring than 'Bloodgood', meaning it naturally dodges the catastrophic late-spring snap frosts that completely destroy the early leaf flushes of other cultivars.
Awards
Highly rated across global maple societies as the premier climate-upgrade over historical atropurpureum selections
