Mino Yatsubusa

Acer buergerianum

An incredibly unique and rare dwarf selection of the Trident Maple. 'Mino Yatsubusa' features highly distinct, glossed green leaves with an elongated, needle-sharp center lobe and short, blunted side lobes, giving it a dramatic, nearly strap-like or T-shaped appearance. It grows as a dense, heavily ramified shrubby mound that exhibits spectacular tones of yellow, fiery orange, and deep maroon simultaneously in the autumn.

Expert Curated Selection. Exceptionally well-suited for container growing or permanent root-restriction applications like bonsai. In North Texas, protection from the blazing southwest 3 PM sun is essential to prevent tip-burn on its narrow foliage.

History & Lineage

INTRODUCED BY
Don Kleim (Henderson Experimental Gardens)
HISTORY
Originated in Japan and was first imported into the United States in 1972. It remained hidden in a private collection until 1980, when Don Kleim of Henderson Experimental Gardens distributed the first young grafted plants to nursery growers in Canby, Oregon, to introduce it to the broader market.

Care Instructions

Provide an open, coarse potting media or loose garden soil to ensure pristine drainage. Water deeply during summer dry spells. Mulch well to buffer hot soil temperatures.

Landscape Usage

Ideal for a focal patio container, courtyard rock garden, or showcase modern Japandi specimen where its delicate leaf texture can be observed up close.

Fun Fact

The word 'Yatsubusa' signifies a dwarf cultivar with short internodes and multiple congested growth buds. This specific variety is highly sought after because it is notoriously difficult to propagate from cuttings.

Awards

Highly prized across international maple registries for exceptional architectural form and historical provenance
