Maple
Griffin's Dragon
Acer truncatum
An incredibly unique and highly resilient mid-sized Shantung Maple cultivar. Originally selected as 'TARP Dragon', 'Griffin's Dragon' is prized for displaying some of the most elegant and distinct leaf aesthetics within the species: each of its five lobes features prominently sharp, dramatic teeth matched with unique rearward-facing basal lobes. Foliage emerges in early spring with a beautiful flush of rich, warm reds. Summer transitions the canopy into a handsome, slightly lighter chartreuse-green. In autumn, it delivers a spectacular, clean display of luminous golden-yellow, occasionally accented with fiery red highlights.

North Texas Micro-climate Notes
Expert Curated Selection. True to its pure Shantung lineage, 'Griffin's Dragon' completely bypasses the need for sensitive understory microclimates or afternoon shade structures. It thrives directly in exposed, full-sun conditions, where the intense light locks in its intricate, sharply-toothed leaf frame and dense branching habits. Ensure it does not sit in standing winter water.
History & Lineage
- INTRODUCED BY
- Keith Johansson (Metro Maples)
- HISTORY
- Discovered as a standout seedling variation and formally evaluated for its compact size and exceptional leaf structure by Shantung maple authority Keith Johansson at Metro Maples in Texas. Developed as a targeted alternative to standard 30-foot varieties, it was later renamed 'Griffin's Dragon' and released to collectors seeking ultimate climate resilience in a smaller structural footprint.
Care Instructions
Extremely rugged. Can be planted straight into heavy native clay matrices, though breaking up the compaction zone and top-dressing with a 2-inch organic bark layer optimizes early root expansion. Pruning requirements are minimal due to its tidy, naturally slow-growing global shape.
Landscape Usage
An exceptional low-maintenance centerpiece for sun-drenched architectural spaces, flanking sunny courtyard paths, anchoring modern rock features, or curated as a high-impact container accent tree.
Fun Fact
This cultivar was originally named 'TARP Dragon' during the federal bank bailout era—standing tongue-in-cheek for 'Targeted Acer Reduction Program'! It was explicitly bred to satisfy collectors who found full-sized Shantung maples too large for their spaces, creating a perfectly scaled, mid-sized tree with corky, rugged bark that looks spectacular as a mature specimen or trained as a high-end bonsai.
Awards
Highly acclaimed across regional specialized registries for revolutionary compact Shantung genetics and exceptional leaf margins
