Golden Falls

Acer palmatum

An extraordinary, highly architectural breakthrough in Japanese Maple selection. 'Golden Falls' is an ultra-pendulous dwarf maple whose branches weep strictly downward parallel to the main stem. Its unique distinction lies in its foliage morphology: unlike traditional weeping maples which feature lacy, finely dissected leaves, 'Golden Falls' features classic, broad, star-shaped palmate leaves. In early spring, the leaves emerge a rich golden-yellow cleanly outlined with a delicate orange border. The canopy shifts to a bright lime-green or chartreuse in mid-summer heat before transforming into a dramatic waterfall of fiery orange and bright scarlet in autumn.

North Texas Micro-climate Notes

Expert Curated Selection. Because its golden-yellow foliage lacks dense layers of protective green chlorophyll, it is highly sensitive to intense thermal heat loads. In North Texas, it is mandatory to position this specimen where it is completely shielded from the dry, scorching 2 PM to 6 PM southwestern sun and wind tunnels. Cultivating it under a high pine canopy or on the northeastern side of an architectural structure, backed by a generous 3-inch mulch layer, is critical to preserve the pristine quality of its golden foliage.

History & Lineage

INTRODUCED BY
Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery
HISTORY
Discovered as a highly stable, distinctive golden branch sport mutation out of the hyper-weeping green cultivar Acer palmatum 'Ryusei' (also known as 'Ao ba jo'). It was propagated, evaluated for structural stability, and formally introduced to the global botanical market by the legendary Flora Wonder arbiter, Gaston Buchholz of Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon.

Care Instructions

Must be planted in loose, well-amended soil with pristine drainage. Stake a strong central leader securely using flexible garden ties to train the trunk up to your desired architectural clearance height, then allow its dynamic lateral limbs to spill downward freely like a waterfall. Maintain a strict schedule of deep root-soaking throughout summer dry spells.

Landscape Usage

Superb for creating dramatic narrow vertical interest in smaller accent garden beds, draping elegantly over stone masonry borders, or showcased as a weeping container specimen in a modern Japandi courtyard configuration.

Fun Fact

Because of its strict pendulous genetics, 'Golden Falls' will not achieve much vertical height on its own without structural staking. Left unstaked, it functions as a highly unique prostrate ground cover that spills beautifully across rocks, terrace stones, or retaining walls.

Awards

Highly coveted across premium international maple registries for its pioneering fusion of palmate foliage with strict weeping growth habits
