Anne Irene

Acer palmatum

An exquisite, compact Japanese Maple prized for its luminous and highly dynamic seasonal color transitions. In early spring, 'Anne Irene' bursts forth with brilliant, glowing chartreuse-to-golden yellow leaves that are vividly framed by a delicate, bright red feathered border. As the heat of summer settles in, the red perimeter softly transitions out to yield a clean, bright lemon-yellow canopy, before a breathtaking autumn finale transforms the entire tree into a spectacular blend of orange-red and deep crimson.

North Texas Micro-climate Notes

Expert Curated Selection. While its 'Summer Gold' genetic backbone gives it a massive advantage against cellular heat breakdown, its pale foliage still benefits from protection against the brutal, drying southwest 3 PM winds in North Texas. Provide filtered afternoon shade to preserve the flawless gold coloration, and maintain a thick layer of organic mulch.

History & Lineage

INTRODUCED BY
Kwekerij van Son & Koot / Dick van der Maat
HISTORY
Discovered in the Netherlands as a distinctive, highly colorful variegated branch sport on a specimen of Acer palmatum 'Summer Gold' at the Kwekerij van Son & Koot nursery. Recognizing its unique stable leaf margins, it was subsequently propagated and introduced to the international trade by the world-renowned Dutch maple specialist Dick van der Maat.

Care Instructions

Thrives in porous, sharply draining, slightly acidic soil media. Avoid waterlogged soils, which can trigger root decline. Provide slow, deep soaking at the root flare during multi-week high-temperature periods.

Landscape Usage

Perfect as a high-contrast accent alongside darker purple-leafed maples (like Bloodgood or Emperor I), tailored for premium patio container specimens, or tucked into a modern Japandi courtyard garden layout.

Fun Fact

Because it is a direct branch mutation of the highly sun-tolerant 'Summer Gold' cultivar, 'Anne Irene' handles sun exposure far better than older yellow varieties like 'Katsura' or 'Aureum', allowing it to lock in its golden tones without instantly washing out.

Awards

Highly acclaimed throughout European and American conifer and maple registries for exceptional architectural stability and color contrast
