Broadleaf Evergreen
Little Gem
Magnolia grandiflora
A dwarf, more compact selection of the classic Southern Magnolia, retaining the species' glossy, dark green leaves (with rusty-brown undersides) and large, fragrant creamy-white summer blooms in a smaller-scale tree better suited to residential landscapes than the massive straight species. It flowers at a younger age than seed-grown Southern Magnolias and provides dense evergreen structure and screening year-round.

North Texas Micro-climate Notes
As an evergreen with substantial leaf surface area, this specimen benefits from consistent soil moisture and a thick mulch layer through North Texas summer heat. It is generally more forgiving of full sun exposure than the collection's Japanese maples.
Care Instructions
Plant in well-draining, organically rich soil. Water deeply and consistently during establishment. Minimal pruning needed; remove only dead or damaged growth, ideally after the main summer bloom period.
Landscape Usage
Useful as a dense evergreen screen, a fragrant flowering accent near a patio or entry, or a smaller-scale specimen where a full-size Southern Magnolia would overwhelm the space.
Fun Fact
Because it flowers at a younger age and stays significantly smaller than standard Southern Magnolias, 'Little Gem' brings the classic large fragrant bloom and glossy evergreen foliage of the species into gardens that don't have room for a 60-80 foot tree.
